  • Consequences of demographic change on electricity, gas and water demand for Germany at the district level,
Forecast of regional energy demand until 2030, commissioned by a public utility, 2007

The demographic and economic development in Germany does not proceed homogeneously in all regions. Already today, regions vary with respect to their structure and energy demand by energy sources. In this project, energy demand was analysed and forecast for different regions until 2020. The bottom-up modelling of regional demand development was derived from forecasts about demography and economy in combination with Prognos‘ expertise regarding the development of specific energy demand in the sectors private households, commerce/services and industry.

  • Potential for CO2 reduction through new construction of a power plant
    commissioned by a public utility,
    2007

In this project, we answered the question how much CO2 could be saved by building a new power plant at a specific location, depending on the kind of energy source used. This comparison considered not only the specific emissions of the new power plant, but also the effects induced by a substitution of existing power plant capacities. Given its electricity generation costs, the position of the new power plant in the current merit order of the German power plant fleet was analysed, and the future development was projected with our power plant model.

  • Actual analysis for 2005 and heat market projections until 2020 for a major German city, commissioned by a public utility, 2007.

Starting from an evaluation of regional statistics and company data, we analysed the energy demand of a major German city, differentiated by energy sources and demand sectors. The obtained total demand by energy sources was further separated by means of energy-specific models. Important inputs encompassed statistical data regarding population, economy and demand, building stock, heating structure and structure of the local economy. The results of the actual analysis formed a sound basis for the subsequent projection. The advantage of this bottom-up approach is that the derivation of results can be traced by means of the underlying data, which was made transparent.
  • Availability of fossil and nuclear energy sources
Study on the long-term availability of fossil and nuclear fuels as an aspect of supply security, commissioned by a public utility, 2006

Planning long-term investments in power plants or grid infrastructure requires answering questions about, besides matters of financing, the availability and supply security of energy sources. In this project, we analysed the current status of knowledge for our client and appraised his investment project with respect to the future chances and risks of supply with energy sources.
  • Determination of potential for climatisation and cooling,
commissioned by a public utility, 2005

The climatisation of dwellings and office premises has increased in recent years. The same holds for cooling demand, especially in the area of commerce. Normally, cooling and climatisation is realised with electricity-driven aggregates, although systems running on district heating or waste heat are also available in the market. In this study, the national and regional status quo regarding cooling and climatisation was determined. Based on the data, we projected the development of cooling markets until the year 2030. Besides the total market, the study focussed on the market potential of heat-driven cooling engines for individual applications
