Prognos AG was commissioned by the World Energy Council - Germany to compile a study on the significance of international hydropower storage for the energy transition. The question at issue is whether and to what extent international hydro-storage plants are able to store surplus electricity from renewable energy sources and to release backup electricity. We expect that Germany will not be able to simultaneously consume 38 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity from renewable energy sources by the year 2050. The excess capacity can then reach up to 60 gigawatt (GW) within individual hours.
