The liberalisation of the electricity markets in the EU from the 1990s onwards was intended to strengthen cross-border trade in order to exploit synergies in electricity generation and reduce grid costs. But with the current high electricity prices, criticism of this market system is being voiced.

Prognos expert Sven Kreidelmeyer, project manager for energy and climate protection policy, writes in the Swiss magazine "Die Volkswirtschaft" about the effects of free competition and current developments in the European electricity sector, among other things. Among other things, he discusses the merit order principle, the EU Commission's reaction to the increased energy prices and Switzerland's flexible electricity trade with neighbouring EU countries.

About the magazine

"Die Volkswirtschaft" focuses on national and international economic policy issues. The authors come from science, business, administration, international organisations and civil society. The magazine is published in German and French. It is published by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).

Due to his electricity market expertise and intensive involvement with energy and climate protection policy, Sven Kreidelmeyer was asked by SECO to write the introductory article.

The article appeared in "Die Volkswirtschaft" on 20 June 2023.
