Since the beginning of the 1990s, the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) has been commissioning a periodical analysis of changes in energy consumption. For several years now Prognos has taken the lead on this analysis.

The results for the year 2022 are as follows:

  • final energy consumption in Switzerland in the year 2022 amounted to 765 PJ, around 4 percent less than for the year 2021
  • mobility (32 percent) accounted for the largest share
  • also significant were heating (28 percent) and process heat (13 percent)
  • while energy consumption for heating was 21 percent less than the previous year due to the comparatively warm weather conditions, energy consumption for mobility increased slightly (+2 percent, due to increasing traffic volumes)
  • 45 percent of energy consumption was accounted for by fuels and combustibles and 27 percent by electricity
  • while the proportion of petrol-based products has gone down by 14 percent since the year 2000, the proportion of electricity has increased by 5 percent
  • the central driver for development in terms of mineral oil products is substitution (replacement through other energy sources), while for electricity it is the volume (more devices, engines, etc.) that has the greatest effect
