We are very pleased to continue our commitment to supporting talented students in the academic year 2019/2020 and to support the saxophonist Mattia Maccarelli with a German Scholarship. As a bachelor student, he studied in the class of Johannes Ernst Saxophone at the "Hanns Eisler" University of Music Berlin.

The Italian saxophonist received his first musical education at the age of six on the piano and later the clarinet in the municipal brass band of Passignano sul Trasimeno. At the age of 14, he switched to his desired instrument, the saxophone.

In 2004 Mattia Maccarelli began studying classical saxophone at the Conservatorio di Musica “Francesco Morlacchi” di Perugia in Umbria, in his home country. In parallel, he graduated with a bachelor's degree in foreign-language philology from the University of degli Studi di Perugia, moved to Berlin in 2009 and graduated from the Humboldt University in Berlin in 2012 with his master's degree in European literature. In 2016, he resumed his saxophone studies at the Hanns Eisler Berlin University of Music and is currently in the 7th semester of his bachelor’s degree with Johannes Ernst.

His studies at the HFM have a focus on chamber music and solo projects. He is also a volunteer in Berlin and Brandenburg and is very active as a musician, especially in church music.

Mattia Maccarelli is an international prize winner, having won the first prizes at the 16th Concorso internazionale for young musicians “Luigi Zanuccoli” (Sogliano del Rubicone, 2018) and at the 17th international competition of the Esecuzione musicale "Premio Città di Padova" (Padua, 2019).
