Since the early 1990s, periodic analyses of changes in energy consumption have been carried out on behalf of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE). Prognos has been responsible for leading the analysis for several years. These are the key findings for developments in the period 2000-2024:Energy demand in Switzerland is declining. Between 2000 and 2024, final energy consumption will fall by 72 Petajoule (PJ) – a reduction of over eight percent. The largest contribution to this decline comes from the area of space heating. Improved building standards, energy-efficient renovations and more efficient heating systems will lead to savings of over 50 PJ – despite a simultaneous increase in heated living and usable space.Consumption for process heat will also fall significantly between 2000 and 2024, decreasing by around 22 PJ (-20 percent). In contrast, electricity demand will rise by just under 19 PJ between 2000 and 2024. This is due to the demand for electrical appliances, space heating and, from around 2022, mobility.Despite increasing electrification, consumption for lighting will decline – an indication of successful efficiency measures such as the spread of LED technology. Demand for cooling and freezing also decline slightly.Links and downloadsTo the analysis (PDF)More information on the SFOE websiteTo the project pageLast update: 28.01.2026 Do you have questions?
