The German retail sector finds itself confronted with a variety of internal and external factors that can have significant impact on their business activities. These factors are diverse and go from regulatory requirements and climate change consequences to geopolitical conflicts.

From the perspective of these complex challenges our client saw a need to be proactive and is thus endeavouring to develop a transparent, well-founded and group-wide concept for the identification of its critical raw materials. On this basis, field comprehensive goals and a standardised action framework are to be defined. We have supported the client from the development stage right through to implementation.

Implementation concept for the raw materials strategy

We developed an implementation concept that enables the systematic and regular identification of strategic important raw materials. This concept is based on the regulatory development of the materiality of raw materials and the availability of data.

In collaboration with our client, we identified a set of driving forces and topics relevant to the company’s availability, economic efficiency and sustainability. To illustrate the resulting opportunities and risks we developed a set of 30 quantitative and qualitative indicators. These indicators form the heart of the concept and enable a comparison of various raw materials, from agricultural commodities through to industrial raw materials, in terms of priority. These indicators were determined for a selection of 100 industry relevant raw materials, identified by the client.

Web tool for ranking raw materials

The result of our work is an interactive web tool, which provides our client with a ranking of their prioritised raw materials for various scenarios that can be filtered by business unit. The resulting findings should serve as a basis for the development of raw material specific strategies.
