Which energy technologies offer the greatest potential for the future? And in which areas is it worthwhile to strengthen research, development or market deployment in a targeted way?
For a public institution in Austria, Prognos developed a data-driven analysis tool that systematically evaluates the performance of research, technology and innovation along the energy transition value chain. The tool examines 16 innovation areas, including photovoltaics, wind power, heat pumps, hydrogen, electricity storage, and CCU/S, as well as cross-cutting system topics such as smart grids.
The tool identifies where along the innovation chain, from research and development through to market deployment, there is a particular need for action.
The analysis draws on nine data sources across six types of data:
Based on these data, the tool calculates around 70 indicators. These measure, among other things, specialisation, scientific impact, growth, patent activity, and public and private funding rates.

All results were integrated into an interactive dashboard. A heat map provides an overall view of all innovation areas and indicators. In addition, users can access detailed topic profiles, dedicated analytical views, and explanations of the methodology. This enables decision-makers to quickly identify areas for action and derive potential intervention points within innovation and market development processes.
