2025
Mobility has become more affordable and somewhat more sustainable, but reliability in German transport has deteriorated significantly.
This is shown by the latest Mobility Index, which Prognos has compiled for the ADAC for the fourth time. The index examines the extent to which transport in Germany has been developing towards sustainability since 2015. The focus topic of this edition is road safety.
The Mobility Index takes into account data up to 2023; complete data for later years is not yet available. It has improved slightly in almost all dimensions compared to the previous year. The only exception is reliability: in 2023, there were more traffic jams and rail transport became less punctual.
The most important results:
The ADAC Mobility Index provides a scientifically sound data basis and shows how sustainable mobility is developing in Germany. The index is based on publicly available data that comprehensively maps mobility in private and public transport. Both short-term and long-term changes are documented, evaluated and their causes analysed using scientific methods.
The sustainability assessment is based on ecological, economic and social aspects, which are combined into five dimensions: traffic safety, climate and environment, availability, reliability and affordability. Each dimension comprises several indicators that together paint a holistic picture of mobility in Germany.

How do public IT service providers and public administrations work together? For the 2026 Trend Report, we examined the role IT service providers play in modernising public administration.
Energy prices remain high, and the expansion of renewable energies continues to fall short of targets: this is shown by our 14th Energy Transition Monitoring report, which we compiled on behalf of the vbw.
Prognos supports the German Federal Environment Agency in underpinning the National Circular Economy Strategy with concrete measures, priorities and a robust monitoring system.
Methane emissions from landfills are an often underestimated climate challenge. On commission by Kanadevia Inova, we investigated how these emissions develop over time and what levels they reach.
For DB Regio, we calculated three scenarios showing how autonomous driving technologies could impact public transport economically, ecologically and socially.
Prognos has been providing communications support for the network expansion of distribution network operator Schleswig-Holstein Netz since 2006.
The Talent Booster Mechanism supports eleven EU regions that are suffering from a decline in the working-age population and a low proportion of university graduates. The first pillar has been successfully implemented.
A shrinking workforce, digitalisation and decarbonisation: Prognos examined the specific effects of global trends on regional labour markets.
We combine economic research and strategy consulting for sustainable decisions in politics, business and society. Our robust data, precise analyses and scientifically based findings enable fact-based progress – financially independent, politically neutral.
