How are things looking for Germany’s green tech industry? How ecologically and economically significant is green technology for Germany? Where is there still room for growth?

The green tech industry is multifaceted. Solar and wind technologies, electric vehicles, energy storage systems, recycling processes and much more. All of these sectors help combat the climate crisis and protect natural habitats. At the same time, through innovative technologies the industry continues to create economic opportunities and open up new markets.

The Green Tech Atlas provides a regular, comprehensive overview of the technological and economical trends in this cross-section industry. The last edition of the atlas was issued in 2021. Prognos has been commissioned by the Federal Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection (BMUV) to compile the seventh edition.

The Green Tech Atlas: the leading study on the German green tech industry

The Green Tech Atlas is a comprehensive publication that regularly provides an overview of the markets for environmental technologies and resource efficiency in Germany. It serves as the central source of information on the significance, status and future perspectives of green technologies in Germany.

The last edition was the Green Tech Atlas 2021. Prognos was commissioned with compiling the new edition. As in the previous studies, the Green Tech Atlas 2025 will present current developments in the “Green tech industry - made in Germany” and illustrate the opportunities as well as the risks.

The GreenTech Atlas 2025: Germany's key industry on the road to sustainability

The GreenTech Atlas 2025 proves that the German GreenTech sector has established itself as a forward-looking and value-adding industry within the national economy. With a significant share of 9.0 percent of gross value added in 2023 and rapid growth since 2010, the relevance of this industry is becoming increasingly clear.

Growth and innovative strength in the GreenTech sector

  • The GreenTech sector in Germany has recorded average annual growth of 4.7 percent since 2010 and employed approximately 3.4 million people in 2023.
  • German exports in the GreenTech sector amounted to 132 billion euros in 2023, with more than half going to other EU countries.
  • Germany is one of the top three countries for GreenTech patent applications and holds 16.5 percent of global patents in this sector.

Strategic areas of action for the GreenTech sector

  • Continue to drive forward the transformation towards climate neutrality and a circular economy: Robust domestic demand is crucial for the global competitiveness of the GreenTech market.
  • Exploit geopolitical opportunities in emerging markets: German companies should tap into new markets, especially in countries with growing demand for green technologies such as India and Vietnam.
  • Strengthen research and development: Germany should invest in innovation and improve the framework conditions for start-ups in order to secure the long-term competitiveness of the green tech industry.

Our approach

We created a founded quantitative analysis of the green tech industry with the help of the Prognos envigos environmental economy model.

In the process, we examined the industry as a whole as well as the specifics of the individual leading markets:

  • The environmentally friendly generation, storage and delivery of energy
  • Energy efficiency
  • Raw materials and material efficiency
  • Sustainable mobility
  • Recycling economy
  • Sustainable water economy
  • Sustainable agriculture and forestry

The circular economy and the potential of the circular economy were examined in more detail as leading markets.

Further areas of focus were the global market and innovation: we analysed global demand, Germany’s position in the global market and the most important potential markets. In addition, we examined the state of innovation with a patent analysis.

The analysis is based on a comprehensive company survey, which provides additional qualitative results. The aim of the analysis was to identify current market trends and growth potential, as well as the respective drivers and obstacles.
