QMR – Qualitative Mind Research

How do refugees with disabilities live in Germany? How can they find work? The participation of this vulnerable group is hampered by a variety of structural and legal barriers.

Against this backdrop, the General Secretariat of the German Red Cross has commissioned a study on the situation of refugees with disabilities in Germany. We are conducting the study in collaboration with QMR – Qualitative Mind Research.

Comprehensive insight into the living conditions of those affected

The aim of the study is to gain valuable insights into the living conditions of refugees with disabilities in Germany. The focus is on accommodation conditions and access to the labour market.

The study aims not only to identify specific needs and challenges, but also to develop practical solutions and recommendations for action that meet the needs of the target group.

Our approach

The study follows a participatory approach. A project advisory board made up of experts from academia, practice, civil society and self-advocacy groups is accompanying the study to ensure that the perspectives of those affected and professionals are incorporated into the research.

The study design combines qualitative individual and group interviews with the target group as well as stakeholders at the state level, representatives of the support system and professionals who work with refugees with disabilities on a daily basis. This is supplemented by the evaluation of existing data and an online survey of professionals. This will provide a detailed data basis on the situation of the target group.

The study builds on the needs assessment conducted by the German Red Cross (in german) between 2020 and 2022, which examined barriers and gaps in the care of refugees with disabilities.
