Heavy rain, flooding, heatwaves and periods of drought – extreme weather events are on the rise. This poses significant challenges for businesses. Adapting to these changes is essential in order to counter the negative effects of climate change and to safeguard their competitiveness and long-term viability.
The aim of the Netzwerk Klimaanpassung & Unternehmen.NRW (NKU) is to systematically address these challenges. The network acts as a link between businesses, research institutions, associations and business development agencies on the topic of climate adaptation at local and regional level.
The network focuses on two areas:
1. The adaptation economy
The adaptation economy comprises businesses that are already offering concrete solutions and technologies to actively counteract the consequences of climate change. These include, amongst others, providers of green roofs, AI-based flood prevention, sustainable cooling systems and planning services for climate-adapted urban development.
To this end, we identify companies that provide relevant adaptation technologies and solutions, and highlight the diverse range of climate adaptation activities “made in NRW”. In this way, we not only strengthen the potential of the adaptation economy but also promote the development of new (inter-)national markets.
2. Operational adaptation
At the same time, we support companies that need to safeguard their competitiveness and long-term viability in the face of increasing climate change by assisting them with their operational adaptation. The focus here is on key risks such as prolonged heatwaves with increased health risks for employees, yield losses due to drought in agriculture, production disruptions, or damage to buildings and infrastructure caused by the increasing risk of flooding.
By systematically taking into account specific climate risks for their sector, location and value chains, businesses can identify these threats at an early stage and develop targeted adaptation strategies – for example, through structural protective measures, flexible production processes or adapted supply chains.
The NKU network commenced its work in November 2021.
As a central platform, we work within a consortium to promote the transfer of knowledge on corporate climate adaptation and market development through sound economic analyses, provide up-to-date information and create targeted forums for exchange. These include regular consultation sessions, the NKU.Themenspotlight, which focuses on key developments in climate adaptation, the NKU. Hackathon! as an innovation lab for businesses and early-career professionals, and the Climate Resilience Forum as a key industry gathering.
Through these and other initiatives, we bring key stakeholders together, support the development of marketable solutions and help to make the climate adaptation sector in North Rhine-Westphalia more visible and competitive both nationally and internationally. At the same time, we raise awareness amongst businesses of the need to address climate risks within their business models.
The network was established on behalf of the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (MUNV NRW) and is managed by Prognos AG, Rebel Deutschland GmbH, VDI Technologiezentrum and CLIMATICON.

Grüne Start-ups aus NRW stellen ihre innovativen Ideen auf dem GreenVenture Forum 2024 vor. Die Veranstaltung startet mit einer Paneldiskussion zum Thema Klimaanpassung, an welcher Oliver Lühr als Teil des Netzwerks Klimaanpassung & Unternehmen.NRW teilnimmt.
Die Publikation im Rahmen des Netzwerk Klimaanpassung und Unternehmen.NRW beschäftigt sich erstmals mit globalen Handelsverflechtungen von Technologien und Dienstleistungen der Klimaanpassungswirtschaft.
Das Prognos-NKU-Team wird auf dem branchenübergreifenden Treffpunkt rund um die Klimaanpassung in und durch Unternehmen in Nordrhein-Westfalen unterwegs sein.

Studierende verschiedenster Fachrichtungen aus NRW haben die Chance, Lösungsansätze für die unternehmerische Klimaanpassung zu entwickeln.
Im Rahmen der bundesweiten „Woche der Klimaanpassung“ organisiert das Netzwerk Klimaanpassung und Unternehmen.NRW, geleitet von der Prognos AG, drei Formate zum Thema Klimaanpassung und Unternehmen.
Hitzeperioden bedrohen Unternehmen in NRW. Was Unternehmen dagegen tun können, stellt das Netzwerk Klimaanpassung und Unternehmen beim Online-Dialogforum vor.
Ausgewählte Unternehmen präsentieren ihre Lösungen für die Anpassung an Hochwasser und Starkregen und diskutieren gemeinsam mit Expertinnen und Experten ihre Bedarfe für die Zukunft.
Am 2. Februar 2022 fand die Online-Auftaktveranstaltung „Klimaanpassung jetzt angehen!“ des Netzwerks Klimaanpassung und Unternehmen.NRW statt.
