Agora Energiewende, Prognos and the Wuppertal Institute have compiled an analysis of the security of the gas supply in Germany and Europe. It examined how possible it would be to replace Russian gas supply by winter 2022/2023 or thereafter. In this context, experts examined both the user side (how much is required/used) as well as gas origins (the source it originates from).
In 2021, the European Union consumed around 412 billion cubic metres of gas. In the same year, 155 billion cubic metres were supplied to the European Union by Russia. Alongside European countries’ own, internal sources, gas was also procured from Norway, Algeria, Azerbaijan and – as liquid gas (LNG) by ship – from the USA, Qatar, and other countries. In total, around 50 billion cubic metres of additional gas was imported to Europe from the sources cited above. Should an interruption occur to the supply of gas coming from Russia spanning an entire year, a replacement of around 105 billion cubic metres would be required, of which 29 billion cubic metres can be accounted for by Germany (291 terawatt-hours Hu).
In terms of energy consumption, the team of energy experts examined numerous measures in all use sectors with a focus on Germany. It showed that, depending on which measures were put into place, a saving of a total of 16 to 26 billion cubic metres (158 to 261 terawatt-hours Hu) is possible. Without the introduction of further measures, 3 to 13 billion cubic metres would still need to be replaced. Agora Energiewende published the results in March 2022, presented in the form of an impulse paper. The analyses will be explored further in the coming weeks.
