Economic impact
analysis for selected SDGs

Increasing numbers of companies are asking themselves the question: What kind of contribution do we make to society? In order to set their goals and activities in a way that respects sustainable development, companies often use Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a guide. As it is through their activities that companies impact the fields of action that are anchored in the SDGs.

Our client, a foundation group, was already clearly focused on creating its SDGs as a part of its own sustainability process and, in the context of materiality analysis, had already identified its focus SDGs. To help them answer the question asked at the beginning and to provide them with the relevant figures to support this, our role was to visualise the social and economic impact of our client’s activities within these focus SDGs, rendering them quantitative, tangible and thus visible.

Transmission of the economic effects of the focus SDGs

In close collaboration with the client, two levels of consideration were determined: the activity level and project level, the economic effects of both of which should be communicated.

Input-output analyses form the conceptional basis for our calculations. On the basis of the client's expenditure data and input-output data banks we then identified the value chain within the individual SDGs.

Building on this, we calculated the economic key performance indicators (KPIs) in the focus SDGs, in order to representatively map the foundation’s activities. To gain a deeper insight into activities, regional economic effects were also determined for selected lighthouse projects using Prognos' own REGINA model. The KPIs comprise key figures on the generated gross value added, number of jobs created and, on the project level, the amount of tax revenue generated.

Public communication of the impact

In the context of the project, quantitative indicators were developed that illustrate the economic impacts of our client’s activities within the focus SDGs. The results have been made available for any interested parties on our client’s website. In this way the foundation’s activities and their social impact are also made tangible for the public.

German energy market design

2024
| Project

In the coming years new renewable power plants will have to be built – but also flexible gas power plants, which can be used when required. We examined various incentive instruments on behalf of the vbw.
